Why
Should We Care About The Vehicles We Buy and Drive?
General pollution
As well as countering the effects of climate change, focusing on what
cars we buy and how we drive will also help to reduce other forms of
environmental and social damage arising from the use of fossil fuels.
For example, it will minimise the impact of acid rain on water and
forest ecosystems, or reduce localised air pollution and its subsequent
health impacts.
Using indigenous sources of energy will reduce our dependence on
imported fossil fuels and will bring diversity and security of supply to
the energy infrastructure, as well as helping to improve the environment
and minimise the impact of climate change.
Almost all of the cars and trucks we drive run on fuels derived from
oil. Oil is a non-renewable resource, and while there is some debate as
to how long this resource will last, we will eventually have to find new
ways to power highway vehicles.
Until other alternatives are developed, it makes sense to use fossil
resources such as oil more efficiently to buy time to develop new and
better energy sources and to make the transition to these sources
smoother and less expensive.
